Mazda Will Build Greenest Car Engine

Mazda has set a goal for itself to have the greenest car around by 2013, Their plan is to apply a 70 miles per gallon drivetrain into their brand new MAZDA2. A Mazda spokesman clarified the 70 MPG result was from a Japanese test cycle. Fuel economy numbers will be lower in the United States, but still well above the competition's.

The official announcement is a "15 percent better gas mileage than the existing model."

Mazda High Fuel Economy, Low Prices

Mazda is working on way to bring hybrid car fuel economy ratings to gasoline and diesel powered vehicles. This technology, according to the Japanese auto maker, should arrive as early as next year.

These new direct-injection gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, vehicle bodies, and chassis systems will be branded SkyActiv, Mazda Motor Corp. CEO Takashi Yamanouchi said last week. The term is derived from the Sky-G gasoline and Sky-D diesel engine family.
